We started CanDost because of what's on the back of the pouch.
Turn over most wet food sold in India and you get "meat and animal derivatives", a gelling agent, a thickener, a colour. You're feeding it twice a day, every day, and you can't really say what it is. The brands that do tell you plainly cost two to three times more.
We didn't think that trade-off had to exist. So instead of writing a recipe and sending it to someone else's factory, we built the factory. CanDost is made by Sighthound Pharma on our own retort line, and was started by Mahesh Mane, who still runs it. Almost every clean-label pet food in India is made by a contract manufacturer. Ours isn't.
How it's made
Each pouch is filled, sealed, and then pressure-cooked inside the pouch — the same principle as tinned food. The heat does the work preservatives would otherwise do, and the meat and water settle into gravy on their own as it cooks. That's why there's nothing in the pouch to preserve it and nothing to thicken it.
It's also what lets the recipes stay short: a protein, water, and only what the food genuinely needs. We'll keep changing and adding to recipes as we learn what makes them better. That rule won't change.
What it does at the bowl
Most of it comes down to water and protein. Cats in particular don't drink much on their own, and most of the water they take in comes from their food — a wet meal is the simplest way to get it into them. The protein is real muscle meat, in a form fussy eaters will actually finish. And with no gums or gelling agents in the pouch, there's less in there for a sensitive stomach to take issue with.
We won't tell you it fixes anything, or that it's the only thing your pet should eat. It's honest food, made carefully, that they'll finish.
